XYLITOL

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol derived from birch, and most people know it as the sweetener in chewing gum, where it is used because bacteria in the mouth cannot metabolize it. That same property is interesting on the scalp.

Xylitol binds water and holds on to it in the skin's outermost layer. But it is the second effect that sets it apart from ordinary humectants: it disrupts harmful bacteria's ability to attach to the skin and form buildup, while the beneficial bacteria are unaffected. The result is a scalp in better microbial balance, where there is less breeding ground for itching and flaking.

Together with the other birch sugars in the formula it strengthens the skin's moisture barrier, so less water evaporates. The scalp becomes softer and less tight, and hair feels more supple from the root.
