Xanthan gum is produced by letting a bacterium ferment sugar, and the result is a long, branched sugar chain with an unusual property: it is thick at rest but turns thin the moment it is put under pressure.

That is exactly what a scalp serum needs. In the bottle the gel keeps the actives evenly distributed so they do not settle out. When you press or massage the product onto the scalp, it turns fluid and slips easily down between the hairs instead of sitting on top of the hair. And when you let go, it thickens again and stays where it was placed.
