Violet is the only one of the three pigments doing duty in two different products, and that is because violet sits directly opposite yellow on the color wheel.

In the purple products it works alone against the golden, brassy cast that blonde, gray and bleached hair develops over time. Bleaching removes the hair's dark pigment but leaves a warm underlying tone that becomes more visible with every week that passes. The violet pigment layers on top and cools the tone back down, so hair looks cleaner and lighter without needing to be bleached again.

In the blue products for brown hair it plays a different role. There it works together with a blue and a yellow pigment in a blend that hits the deeper, cooler brunette tone. The pigment deposits only on the surface, builds up with each wash and can be rinsed out again.
