SORBIC ACID

Sorbic acid is the acid form of potassium sorbate, and the two often appear together in the same formula. The reason is that only the free acid works against microorganisms, while the salt is easier to work with and more stable.

In an acidic formulation the substance exists in both forms at once, and the ratio between them determines how strongly it preserves. At the slightly acidic pH hair care sits at, a sufficient proportion is in acid form to keep yeast and mold in check.

Sorbic acid is among the mildest preservatives available, approved for certified natural cosmetics and proven over decades in both food and cosmetics. It is used at very low concentrations.
