PROPYLENE GLYCOL

Propylene Glycol is a clear, syrupy liquid that has been used in cosmetics and food for decades. It is occasionally confused with ethylene glycol, that is antifreeze, but the two substances are chemically different. Propylene Glycol is approved as a food additive and is found in everything from cake icing to asthma medication.

In the formula it handles the jobs water cannot. Many plant extracts and actives will not dissolve in water alone, and Propylene Glycol draws them out of the raw material and keeps them dissolved, so they are available when the product is used. At the same time it binds moisture in the upper layers of the skin.

It also has a practical function: it lowers the point at which the formula freezes and makes the product more stable. That is why your shampoo survives a trip in a cold car in winter without separating.
