Propanediol

PROPANEDIOL

Propanediol is produced by fermenting corn sugar with bacteria, and it was developed as a plant-based alternative to propylene glycol, which traditionally comes from the oil industry. Production uses around 40 % less energy and leaves a markedly smaller climate footprint.

In the formula its job is to draw the actives out of the plant raw materials and keep them dissolved, so they are genuinely available when the product reaches the scalp. Without a carrier, several of them would simply settle out in the bottle.

It also has one property worth mentioning: it improves the absorption of other ingredients. Actives that would otherwise stay on the surface get further down when propanediol is present. It suits a sensitive scalp and is considered milder than its oil-derived predecessor.
