Phytantriol

PHYTANTRIOL

Phytantriol is related to phytol, the substance plants build chlorophyll from. It is used in hair care for one reason: it is among the few substances that actually penetrate the hair shaft rather than remaining on the surface.

Inside the shaft it binds water and holds on to it, and that makes a noticeable difference to elasticity. A hair strand with sufficient moisture bends when you comb it out and springs back. A dried-out strand snaps instead. The effect is greatest in the ends, which are the oldest and most exposed part of the hair.

On the scalp it works soothingly and hydratingly, and it is documented to strengthen the skin barrier so less moisture evaporates. Combined with provitamin B5 the two reinforce each other's effect, and together they give a calmer, better hydrated scalp.
