Phenoxyethanol

PHENOXYETHANOL

Phenoxyethanol is a preservative, and it is one of the ingredients people look up most often. So let us take it directly: it occurs naturally in green tea and chicory, it is used at concentrations of no more than 1 %, and it has been assessed as safe for exactly that use by both the EU's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety and US authorities.

It is used because it works broadly. Water, plant extracts and proteins are ideal growing conditions for bacteria and mold, and a product without an effective preservative is not a gentler product but one that becomes unsafe to use within a few weeks. Phenoxyethanol disrupts the cell membranes of microorganisms so they cannot multiply in the bottle.

It became widespread precisely as a replacement for parabens and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and it is today one of the most thoroughly studied substances in cosmetics. It sits far down the ingredient list because so little is needed.
