Sodium Gluconate

SODIUM GLUCONATE

Sodium gluconate is produced by fermenting glucose, and it is a chelator. A chelator binds metal ions, and that is more relevant than it sounds.

All water contains traces of iron, copper and limescale, and those metals catalyze oxidation. They make oils turn rancid faster, break down actives and weaken the effect of preservatives. Sodium gluconate captures the metal ions and renders them inactive, so the rest of the formula can do its job.

In practice that means less preservative is needed, and the actives retain their strength throughout the product's life. It is also fully biodegradable and a gentler alternative to EDTA, which is traditionally used for the task.
