Lactic Acid

LACTIC ACID

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid, the same type of substance known from chemical peels in skin care. It forms naturally through fermentation and is found in cultured dairy products, but it is used here for two very specific reasons.

The first is pH. Lactic acid keeps the product at the slightly acidic level around 4.5 to 5.5 that the scalp thrives at. At that pH the hair's cuticle lies flat, and the beneficial bacteria on the scalp have the best conditions, while the dandruff-causing ones have a harder time.

The second is gentle exfoliation. Lactic acid loosens the bonds between the dead skin cells in the scalp's outermost layer, so they release instead of clumping together into visible flakes. At the same time it binds moisture, which sets it apart from the harsher acids. It clears things up without leaving the scalp dry and tight.
