Potassium Sorbate

POTASSIUM SORBATE

Potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid, which was discovered in rowan berries. Today it is produced synthetically in identical form, and it is one of the most widely used preservatives in both food and cosmetics.

It works specifically against yeast and mold, the microorganisms that get going first in a product containing water and plant extracts. It does so by preventing fungal cells from taking up nutrients, so they cannot multiply. It does little against bacteria, however, which is why it always appears alongside another preservative that covers that side.

It is among the mildest and best tolerated preservatives available and is approved for certified natural cosmetics. It only works in acidic formulations, which suits perfectly, since hair care needs to sit at the scalp's own pH anyway.
