Hydrolyzed Corn Starch

HYDROLYZED CORN STARCH

In its raw form, corn starch is a powder of very long sugar chains. Hydrolysis cuts those chains into shorter pieces, and that is what turns starch from a thickener into a humectant. The short chains dissolve in water and can penetrate, where the long ones would simply sit on top.

Inside the hair shaft they act as a moisture reservoir. The sugar chains bind water and release it slowly, and because they are larger than the simple humectants, they stay put longer. Hair therefore keeps its moisture through the day instead of drying out after a couple of hours.

The side effect is a more even surface. The chains fill in where the cuticle has become rough, which makes hair noticeably easier to detangle, both wet and dry, and helps keep color pigments inside the shaft instead of letting them wash out with every wash.
