Glycerin

GLYCERIN

Glycerin is hair care's most widely used humectant, and there is good reason it has lasted more than a century. The molecule is small and carries three water-binding groups, making it one of the most effective humectants we know. It is typically derived from vegetable oils.

It works by drawing moisture in, both from the air around you and from the deeper layers of skin, and holding it where it does good. It also settles between the cells of the skin's outermost layer and helps the barrier close tightly, so less water evaporates. On the hair shaft it binds moisture in the outer layers and makes the fibers more flexible, which in practice means fewer breaks.

Glycerin is one of the best documented and best tolerated ingredients there is. It is gentle enough for daily use, including on a sensitive, dry scalp.
