Fermented Radish Root

LEUCONOSTOC/RADISH ROOT FERMENT FILTRATE

This is the formula's natural preservative, and the story behind it is fairly simple. You take radish roots, add the lactic acid bacterium Leuconostoc and let it ferment, much like making sauerkraut or kimchi. During fermentation the bacterium produces a group of peptides that keep other microorganisms in check.

The liquid is filtered so the bacteria themselves are gone and only the active peptides remain. They prevent bacteria and mold from growing in the product, which matters when the formula contains proteins and plant extracts that are otherwise ideal nourishment for microorganisms.

The advantage over traditional preservatives is that it is gentle on the scalp's own microbiome and is not suspected of affecting hormone balance. It is approved for certified natural cosmetics and is one of the reasons these formulas can be both paraben-free and stable.
