Diisostearyl Malate is an ester built from malic acid and a branched fatty alcohol from vegetable oil. The branched structure is the key: the molecules cannot pack tightly together, so the substance stays soft and yielding rather than waxy and stiff.

On the hair shaft this creates an unusually soft, almost cushioned feel. The ester forms a flexible layer that moves with the hair rather than cracking and flaking off. That layer also holds moisture inside the shaft and prevents hair from drawing water vapor in from the air, which is the very mechanism behind frizz.

It also serves as a carrier for the oil-soluble actives in the formula, so they distribute evenly. The result is soft, supple hair with controlled frizz, without the heaviness thicker oils can bring.
