Citric Acid

CITRIC ACID

Citric acid occurs naturally in citrus fruit and is one of the most widely used ingredients in hair care, though it rarely gets much attention. Its job is to keep the product's pH down around 4.5 to 5.5, the same slightly acidic level the scalp itself sits at.

That matters more than it sounds. The hair's cuticle lies flat when pH is acidic and lifts when it turns alkaline. Flat-lying cuticle scales make the hair's surface even and closed, which makes it less prone to tangling and breaking.

Citric acid is also what activates the conditioning agents in a conditioner, and what ensures the product's preservative system works as it should. A quiet but indispensable ingredient.
