Cetearyl Alcohol

CETEARYL ALCOHOL

Here is an ingredient misunderstood more often than any other. The word "alcohol" in the name leads many to assume it is drying, but Cetearyl Alcohol has nothing to do with the volatile alcohol found in spirits or hairspray. It is a fatty alcohol derived from plant oils, waxy and solid at room temperature, and it does the exact opposite of drying.

It is what gives a conditioner its creamy texture. It holds water and oil together in one stable cream so the product does not separate in the bottle, and it provides the rich, gliding texture you spread through your hair.

On the hair shaft it forms a softening layer that evens out the cuticle and leaves the surface smooth. Hair becomes easier to detangle and noticeably softer. It suits a dry scalp and is considered one of the mildest ingredients in its category.
