Blue and orange sit opposite each other on the color wheel, and that is the entire principle behind a blue pigment in hair care. When two opposite colors are layered, they cancel each other out and become a neutral tone.

Brown hair reveals its warm undertones when it is bleached, colored, or simply exposed to sun and time. It shows up as an orange, reddish or coppery cast that can be hard to get rid of. Blue pigment is the strongest counter to exactly those orange and red shades, which is why blue products are made for brown hair, while purple ones belong to blonde and gray.

The pigment settles as a thin film on the outside of the hair shaft and builds up gradually with each wash. The effect is greatest on light and porous hair, which takes up pigment most easily. Wash it out and the tone disappears. Leave the product on a little longer for more effect, and switch to a regular shampoo if the tone gets too cool.
