Linoleic acid is an essential omega-6 fatty acid. Essential here means quite literally that the body cannot produce it and must take it in from outside. It is a fixed component of the hair's own lipid layer, the thin film of fat on the outside of every strand that holds the cuticle flat.
Bleaching, coloring and heat styling break that layer down, and the result is felt immediately. The cuticle scales lift, hair becomes rough and porous, and it starts drawing moisture in from the air, which is the very mechanism behind frizz. Linoleic acid steps in and replaces the fatty acids that have been lost.
Once the lipid layer is rebuilt, the cuticle lies tight again. Hair becomes less sensitive to humidity, curls fall into a more cohesive shape, and the brush glides through more easily.
